Notes from the Tampa Public Workshop on November 12, 2008

11/16/2007 - Tampa is one of 10 cities selected to receive funding from AIA for the purposes of implementing a Sustainable Design Assessment Team. Experts from various fields are assigned to a city based on the needs of the city. The Tampa grant’s focus is to determine how to implement the recently approved Comprehensive Plan.

For the past year a team has been working towards achieving the goals of the contract award.
Focus Questions that were answered by the public attending the workshop:
What should someone remember about Tampa?
• We are a big city with a small town feel
• Close proximity to area attractions
• Culture diversity, melting pot of ethnic groups
• Great airport
• Tampa’s rich history
As Tampa grows, where do you want the new housing to be located?
There was much discussion on this question. Most of the comments discussed where we don’t want development to be located. However, this questioned was worded for a specific purpose by the Experts.
• Empty land downtown
• Where ever it is needed with appropriate density
What are the challenges to getting around Tampa?
• Lack of mass transit – both public and private companies
• Bike routes do not take into consideration ever changing weather conditions
• Lack of sidewalks, bike lanes, cross walks
• Inappropriate and ineffective bus routes
• No use of the water ways to move people
• Uneducated drivers – from a safety perspective
• Lack of signage for the area businesses
• Little to no information detailing available transit routes
• Technology is not effectively used to utilize mass transit
• ‘Car’ mentality
• Coordination and communication between existing mass transit systems (HART and USF)

Are there any organizations working to improve Tampa?
There are many organizations in Tampa that are working to improve our city. Public, private, for-profit and not-for-profit entities. They cover everything from business to neighborhoods, grass roots, educations and government organizations.
